Another long-awaited backhoe job has been the right side bunker on #14. This bunker was renovated in the mid 90's, but basically remained in the same footprint since the early, early days. As a result there is 50 years of sand build up on the banks and slopes, which was very evident on Thursday when I began digging it out. Another issue with this bunker is the tree roots growing beneath it from the adjacent poplars, making it near impossible to maintain properly. Overall it was the worse bunker on the course and one of the most used by players. We were able to save about 15 tons of bunker sand out of it which will be used in the practice bunker and other older bunkers on the course as top-up sand. The shape of the bunker will change, turning away from the poplars and shaped to a similar style as #1 and #6. We will put new sand in it likely next spring when the shaping and sodding is complete. The rain we are getting will hamper work in this area.
